If you’re searching for the fastest car in game GTA 5, the answer depends on whether you’re playing standard GTA Online or using Hao’s Special Works (HSW) upgrades. As of 2026, the Bravado Banshee GTS is the key name to know. With HSW performance upgrades on supported platforms, it can reach a tested top speed of about 172.5 mph (277.6 km/h). Without HSW, its tested top speed is around 138 mph (222 km/h).
However, top speed is not everything. A car that dominates a long highway may lose on a tight race track because of braking, cornering, acceleration, or traction. So, if your goal is to find the best fast car in GTA 5, it helps to understand how speed is actually measured.
Fastest Car in Game GTA 5: Which Car Holds the Record?
For GTA Online players with access to HSW, the Bravado Banshee GTS currently stands at the top of tested straight-line speed rankings.
With a fully upgraded HSW setup, the Banshee GTS reaches approximately 172.5 mph. That makes it significantly faster than its standard configuration.
The Banshee GTS is a Sports-class vehicle and was introduced with the Agents of Sabotage update. Rockstar officially lists the vehicle as HSW-compatible, making it one of the standout performance cars for newer versions of GTA Online.
For players who do not have access to HSW, the answer changes. Recent tested rankings put the Banshee GTS around 138 mph, while newer vehicles such as the Grotti Cartuccia GT can reach approximately 139 mph in standard form.
What Makes the Banshee GTS So Fast?
The Banshee GTS combines strong acceleration with an unusually high top-speed ceiling.
Its standard performance is already impressive, but HSW upgrades transform its straight-line performance.
HSW is particularly important because it is not available on every platform. The system is supported on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC Enhanced, while older versions of the game do not receive the same HSW performance upgrades.
Fastest Car in Game GTA 5 With HSW
If your only goal is maximum sustained road speed, the Banshee GTS HSW is the car to consider first.
Its approximately 172.5 mph tested speed puts it ahead of other HSW contenders such as the Grotti Itali GTO Stinger TT and Declasse Tampa GT. Current rankings place those cars at about 168.5 mph and 166 mph respectively.
That makes the Banshee GTS especially useful for:
- Highway speed tests
- Straight-line races
- Freemode driving
- Long-distance time trials
- Top-speed challenges
- Showing off high-end vehicle performance
Fastest GTA 5 Cars Without HSW
Not everyone plays on an HSW-supported platform.
If you are playing GTA Online on an older console or PC Legacy, you need to look at standard vehicle performance instead.
Recent 2026 testing places the Grotti Cartuccia GT at roughly 139 mph without HSW, with the Banshee GTS close behind at around 138 mph.
The Cartuccia GT was introduced in the 2026 Kortz Center Heist update, making it one of the newer additions to the high-speed vehicle lineup. Rockstar’s 2026 update notes confirm the addition of the Grotti Cartuccia GT.
This is an important distinction because many older articles still list previous speed champions without accounting for newer vehicles.
Top Fast Cars in GTA Online
If you want more than one option, here are some of the major speed-focused vehicles worth knowing.
1. Bravado Banshee GTS
Standard tested speed: about 138 mph
HSW tested speed: about 172.5 mph
Class: Sports
The Banshee GTS is the strongest choice when maximum top speed is the priority, especially on HSW-supported platforms.
Its combination of standard speed and HSW performance makes it one of the most versatile choices for players who want an extremely fast road car.
2. Grotti Cartuccia GT
Standard tested speed: about 139 mph
Class: Sports
The Cartuccia GT is particularly interesting for players who cannot use HSW.
It has a slightly higher tested standard top speed than the regular Banshee GTS according to current 2026 rankings.
3. Grotti Itali GTO Stinger TT
The Stinger TT is another major HSW performer.
With the appropriate upgrade, current testing places it around 168.5 mph. Rockstar introduced the vehicle as an HSW-compatible Sports car, giving it strong straight-line performance.
4. Declasse Tampa GT
The Tampa GT is another HSW option for players who enjoy muscle cars.
Current tested rankings put its HSW top speed at approximately 166 mph.
It provides a different driving feel from the Banshee GTS while still delivering very strong highway performance.
5. Grotti Veleno GT
The Veleno GT is one of the newer Super-class vehicles.
Its standard tested top speed is around 138.75 mph, while its HSW version can reach approximately 164 mph.
That makes it an interesting choice for players who want a modern supercar with strong straight-line speed.
Is the Fastest Car Also the Best Race Car?
Not necessarily.
This is one of the most important things to understand when choosing a vehicle in GTA Online.
Top speed measures how quickly a vehicle can travel on a sufficiently long straight. A race, however, includes corners, braking zones, elevation changes, and acceleration points.
A slower car on paper can therefore beat a faster car around a circuit.
For example, current testing shows that some cars with lower maximum speeds can deliver excellent lap times because they handle corners and braking zones more effectively.
Top Speed vs. Lap Time
Think of it this way:
Top speed: Best for long straight roads.
Acceleration: Important when leaving corners.
Braking: Helps you slow down before turns.
Handling: Determines how confidently you can take corners.
Traction: Affects how efficiently the car puts power onto the road.
If you’re entering races, you should consider all five.
Best Fast Car for Highway Driving
For highway driving, the Banshee GTS HSW is an obvious choice.
Long roads allow the vehicle to build speed without being interrupted by tight corners.
The Los Santos Freeway and other long stretches of road are ideal for testing a car’s maximum velocity.
However, remember that traffic can make real-world driving in GTA Online very different from controlled testing.
A car that reaches 172.5 mph on an open test run will not necessarily maintain that speed while weaving through traffic.
Best Fast Car for Racing
If your priority is competitive racing, don’t automatically buy the fastest top-speed car.
Instead, examine the type of race.
A highway race favors top speed.
A technical circuit favors acceleration, braking, and handling.
A mixed race requires a balanced vehicle.
This is why experienced GTA Online players often keep multiple performance cars rather than relying on one vehicle for every situation.
How HSW Changes GTA Online Car Performance
Hao’s Special Works is one of the biggest reasons GTA Online speed rankings can become confusing.
HSW upgrades can dramatically increase the performance of compatible vehicles.
Rockstar’s Enhanced version of GTA Online includes HSW at the LS Car Meet, with selected vehicles receiving major performance upgrades.
The result is effectively two different speed categories:
- Standard vehicles
- HSW-upgraded vehicles
When comparing cars online, always check which category a ranking uses.
Otherwise, you could think one vehicle is faster simply because it was tested with a performance upgrade that another vehicle did not receive.
Common Mistakes When Choosing the Fastest GTA 5 Car
One common mistake is trusting the in-game speed bar.
The displayed vehicle statistics are useful for basic comparisons, but they do not directly tell you the vehicle’s actual tested maximum speed.
Community testing is generally used to determine real-world top-speed figures.
Another mistake is ignoring the platform.
An HSW vehicle may have a completely different performance level depending on whether you are playing an HSW-supported version of GTA Online.
A third mistake is confusing top speed with lap performance.
The fastest highway car is not automatically the fastest car around a circuit.
Expert Tips for Getting Maximum Speed
If you’re testing a vehicle, use a long, straight road.
Avoid traffic whenever possible.
Fully upgrade the vehicle’s engine, transmission, turbo, and other relevant performance components before comparing it with another car.
For HSW vehicles, install the appropriate HSW performance upgrade if your platform supports it.
Then perform several runs rather than relying on one attempt.
Traffic, road angle, bumps, collisions, and driving technique can all affect your result.
Keep Your Test Conditions the Same
For a fair comparison, use the same road, direction, weather conditions, vehicle configuration, and starting method.
Testing one car on a downhill road and another on flat ground does not give you a meaningful comparison.
Consistency is especially important when two cars have very similar top speeds.
Is the Banshee GTS Worth Buying?
If your primary goal is speed, the Banshee GTS is a strong choice.
Its standard performance is already competitive, and HSW upgrades make it the current standout for maximum straight-line speed.
However, players should consider the total investment.
The vehicle itself costs money, and HSW performance upgrades add another major expense. Current vehicle databases list the Banshee GTS at $1,989,500, with the HSW conversion costing an additional $1,900,000.
Therefore, it makes the most sense for players who specifically want top-tier speed rather than simply needing an affordable fast car.
